Marion Ruth (Koenning) Allen Obituary

Marion Allen, 85, passed away Monday November 18, 2024.  She was born in Ganado, Texas to Louis Koenning and Selma Weidner Koenning on July 18, 1939.   She was baptized and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church.  She attended and graduated from Ganado High School in 1959.  Marion received training at a business school in Victoria and then began working for the newspaper in Victoria.

In December 1946, her father Louis married Martha Ulrich who became a very loving parent to Marion for the rest of Martha's life.  While working at the newspaper, she met Philip Allen and married in December 1962.  He became the love of her life. Because Philip was a career United States Coast Guardsman, Marion lived at bases in Bermuda, Connecticut, New York, Galveston and a lighthouse on the coast of Oregon.  When her husband went to restricted bases, she often returned to Ganado to stay with her parents in Ganado.

Marion retired to live in Ganado. Here she became active at St. James Lutheran Church, serving at one time as a member of the church council.  She worked for several years at the local home health care agency, a job that she loved and of which she exhibited pride for the rest of her life.  She was known for her sewing, crochet and knitting skills.  She loved the opportunities of contributing crafts to her church in support of its projects.  She treasured her membership at St. James Lutheran to the extent that when she moved to College Station to live near her brother, she did not join the local church.

She is preceded in death by her husband and well as her parents.  She is survived by her brother, Alton Ray Koenning, and his wife Sheila, and their daughters Elizabeth and her husband Jim Snell, and Amy and her husband Jim Joyce, and their son, Scott Koenning and his wife Pam.  In addition, she is survived by numerous nephews and nieces.

The family will receive visitors on Tuesday November 26, 2024, at 1:00pm at St. James Lutheran Church in Ganado with a funeral service beginning at 2:00pm.  Interment will follow at the Ganado City Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jim Joyce, Amy Joyce, Jim Snell, Elizabeth Snell, Luke Janssen and Scott Koenning. Services are entrusted to the Todish family of Ganado and Slavik Funeral Homes.
